OVERVIEW
The Glory to Glory House of Refuge (Glory House) is a community-based,
transitional housing program for homeless women living with HIV/AIDS,
substance abuse and mental health issues in
Wake County,
North Carolina.
Located in the heart and capital-area of
North Carolina,
Glory House is the only program of its type offering full-time shelter and
support services for an increasing population of women in
Wake
County
living with these disabilities.
Our residents live with us around the clock, for a period of eight months to two years, depending on individual need and readiness to rejoin society. Glory House offers a challenging program that we base on individual needs, even in our group-style home, where each woman can dictate her individual recovery steps. Staff at Glory House helps to guide individuals through the process of maintaining a healthy, responsible and productive relationship with society. Ongoing help is provided in such areas as health, housing, employment, life-skills and education while living in a structured environment.
We believe in the uniqueness and worth of all women; thus, we strive to empower them to lead self-directed lives with dignity and hope. We encourage growth among these women when we show compassion as we present the hope of our vision.
HISTORY
Glory House was founded in June 1998 by Angela and Travis Ferrell, at which
time
Glory House obtained non-profit status 501(c)(3) and was incorporated.
Angela has
worked with the homeless population since 1988, and has been active with
local service providers and homeless advocates. Travis, successful in
overcoming substance abuse
ten years ago, has focused his experience and life skills on the community
to provide encouragement to the women in the Glory House program.
Together, the Ferrell’s turned their longtime dream of building a refuge for women into the Glory to Glory House of Refuge. Glory House has become a vital local resource in our community by providing care to those who need it most.
